We have 'barefooted' regularly over the past few years, but it isn't easy with our climate.  Here at Ten-Point we practise what we preach and help you too to use your body efficiently, easily and comfortably, with the best physiological footwear available on the market - encouraging soft feet and natural midfoot strike, rather than the nonsense of heel strike/toe off. 

Until now, this has only been achievable with a depth of technological sole that 'removes' us from the ground.  The foot is soft and relaxed, the body is realigned and joints articulate as they should.  You feel the difference it makes to your skeletal structure and muscle tone, but one natural element is missing - you don't feel the ground.  And we're so used to not 'feeling', we don't miss it.  Or do we?  What's the first thing we do when we get home at the end of the day?  What's the first thing we do when we arrive at the beach?  KICK OUR SHOES OFF AND GO BAREFOOT - and enjoy it! 

We were so excited about the arrival of Vibram Fivefingers that the only thing to do was put them on and go trail running - on a new route and close to dusk.  We got lost - ish - the sun went down, the woods were very dark, it was hard to see where our 'barefooting' Fivefinger'ed shoes were landing - and it was wonderful! 

  • With toes separated into their individual Fivefingers pockets, balance was enhanced
  • The close, Fivefingers sock-like fit and the razor-sipped Vibram sole led to an amazing grip on all sorts of ground
  • Feeling, feed-back, proprioception (the body's awareness of itself in motion) in Fivefingers was 100% and fascinating.  How interesting to feel the warmth of the sunburned cornfield, the cool of the mud, the roughness of the woodland trail and the smoothness of the tarmac
  • Our heart rates were lower wearing Fivefingers compared to what we would expect on a similar run in our usual trainers
  • Feeling the ground, as if our feet truely were barefoot, but actually being safely protected from puncture by the Vibram Fivefingers sole, led to instinctively better technique.  It has been documented that barefoot running increases efficiency by 4% - with full access to all our elastic tendons giving energy return, we felt it.  Actually, we didn't want to stop!  After 90 minutes of on and off-road running in Fivefingers, we had smiles wrapped round our faces and energy in our legs.  Sadly, it was bedtime.

Protecting yourself by instinctively engaging your body biomechanically soundly, reduces injury risk.  You would no more heel strike and toe-off than fly to the moon if you were walking or running barefoot.  Remember, if you support, you weaken; if you cushion, you muffle important feedback.  In regular shoes, you are not ignoring the signs leading up to pain and injury - you have no idea they are there because you can't feel them.
